Can anyone tell me if a jumper and cable is included with an OEM hard drive? I'm looking at buying a Maxtor 20gig.
Hi Bokus,
The few OEM hard drives I have purchased came without the IDE cable, but they had a jumper installed. If you are adding this drive to a system, you may already have a cable that can accomodate a second drive. If this is a first-time hard drive installation for you, check this Adding a second hard drive (http://www.infohq.com/Computer/adding-second-hard-drive-review.htm) link.
One advantage of a full kit is that they usually have an installation disk to help setup the system and tranfer the operating system and files over to the new drive, if you wish. You can also download the program from the manufacturer's web site.

Most often it's this way:
Retail = HD, full manual, utilities diskette, cable, 4 screws,
hardware kit to install in 5.25" drive bay, pretty box
OEM = HD, 1-page instruction sheet, 4 screws, diskette (probably),
cable (maybe, but probably not), brown or no box
Jumper is standard with all drives.
If the drive is ATA-66 or -100, the special required 80-wire cable
could cost $10 or more, if bought separately. (~$30 @ Best Buy)

Here is one more thing I did not get added in time:
The software may also install a Dynamic Drive Overlay, if needed, to overcome BIOS limitations of older computers. See this PCGuide (http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/bios/over_DDO.htm) link for more information about that.

Me too, Reid. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
If there is a rebate offered, you have to get the retail packaging in order to have a UPC.
