Hi folks. I recently purchased a barebones PC w/ a PCCHIPS P21G (V3.1) motherboard. I dropped in a HDD and an optical drive and I was off and loading Windows XP Pro. All was fine until all of a sudden I lost all sound. I have tried everything, including troubleshooting for quite a while on XP, control panel, re-loading the drivers off of both the CD-Rom which came with the board as well as off of the PCCHIPS web-site. Even to the point of actually formatting and re-loading XP! I've looked for jumpers of some sort on the Mainboard and looked for "enable-diable" within the BIOS. Nothing. There wasn't any kind of cable connected to the board that I can remember for that small period of time when the sound was working. I have looked for some kind of cable or jumper that might have become dislodged. Again, nothing. I Any ideas from anyone? I would be most appreciative. Thank you. benny P.S. I also went out and purchased a PCI soundcard and dropped that in. Again, nothing. Thanks. B

Welcome tohttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!

What are you using for sound? If speakers, I would try headphones...

Glad to have found the forum. I did actually try that. SOrry for not mentioning it. BTW, You can actually tell "sound" is playing via the equalizer bar on Media Player for example. Just no sound. It stems from the board, I believe. The BIOS beeps are there, though. So frustrating! Any ideas would be helpful. Benny

Have you checked sound properties to see if anything vital is muted?

What does DXDiag have to say? How about Device Manager?

I've been in Device manager quite abit. It says the ol "device is wrking properly". I have no idea what "DXDiag" is...

Click on Start - Run - type "dxdiag" (DirectX diagnostic). Once that finishes loading (it takes awhile) click on the Sound and Music tabs and see if any errors are showing up, or if any settings look awry.

Hey thanks Saphaline,
I did experience problems on the sound tab as there is no sound being produced, so I simply answered "no" to the "did you hear any sound?" question. But thanks anyways!! That is a great testing utility anyways and that DirectX cube was cool to see..LOL. Thanks man. benny

Alllright sportsfans,
Heres the end result of this problem. Turns out that the motherboard was missing jumpers on pins 5,6,9, and 10 of the front audio panel header. I finally heard back form my vendor who stated that they don't test sound on barebones systems they sell. When I told him that I was actually recieving sound when I first dropped in my optical drive and DDR400 he sounded like I was trying to blow his mind. Now I'm wondering myself. DId I leave this planet for a short trip to the Twilight Zone or what!?!?! Bottom line. I've got sound and it's off to install Call of Duty 2. Hope this helps someone else down the road! benny

Sure glad you got your sound back benny!!:) I'm just curious, if the vendor you bought your barebones sys. from doesn't test the sound it kinda makes me wonder what else they don't test. I'd keep hold of your documentation and all receipts for a good long while there kiddo, just to be on the safe side.
LG;)
