hello to everybody,
Iomega suggests to install an EIDE Zip drive in several different ways except the one i am interested in and this would be having the Zip as a slave in the first channel (IDE controller) with the hard drive as a master. They actually do not recommend this configuration but I want to know also your opinion. Does anyone of you know if this configuration works? ( I want to keep the second (slave) option of the second channel free for a future CD-RW that`s why i am asking this question).
thanks

andreadebiase,

If you connect on the Primary IDE with the HDD, it will slow it down thats why they recommend you install on the Secondary IDE.

You can have also have a master and slave configuration on the Secondary IDE. I have my computer set up like I've just explained to you and it works GREAT!

Consider a few things:

Depending on the capabilities and features of your chipset and IDE controller channels, you may not
adversely affect the operation of the HD itself when the Zip is on the same channel as the slave.

But the biggest problem will occur when copying from a master HD to a slave Zip on the same channel.
You will not be taking advantage of DMA transfers, because one channel
cannot handle a read and a write operation simultaneously.

If your primary use for the Zip is to copy files from the HD, this will
be quite a bit slower than if each drive were on a separate controller.

Iomega has been making Zip drives for many years, and undoubtedly has a
lot of experience and user feedback on which to base their recommendations.
