I have a modem that functions properly and can be used by HyperTerminal. The modem is installed properly, as well.
However, when I try to use Make a New Connection in Windows ME(through Dial-up Networking) it does not list the modem. If I unistall the modem and allow the wizard to detect it, it goes on to install it like it should, but still does not allow me to choose it. It appears to do this for any modem so I basically cannot connect to the ISP. I've never seen anything like this before, anbody have ideas?
What kind of modem is it?
Uninstall the modem...again.
Then boot into Safe-mode. Go to Device Manager and make sure that ALL the modems are uninstalled.

Yup, all the modems are uninstalled and checked in safe-mode. The modem I want to work is an external 3Com Sportster 56k v90. It has been installed on this computer a few years ago and worked, although the OS has since been completely reinstalled over a reformat a few times. Note that the modem does work on other computers right now.
I've never seen this wizard not work so I don't even know if a workaround exists. Is there a feasible way to do what the wizard does?
I'd hate to reinstall my OS just for this.

I had the same experience with an HSP internal modem. The wizard said it had installed the modem successfully but I cant use the modem.
I went to the Add New Hardware and installed it from there. I dont know how but it worked from there.
Since this is an external modem...
Need to make sure that COM1 is enabled in BIOS (and if there are two connectors, make sure you are hooking it up to correct one....<whistles innocently>). Also make sure that COM1 properly recognized in Device manager (ports) with no conflicts.
You may need to uninstall/reinstall Com1, too.
And if COM1 is properly set up, you should be able to just attach the moden and go...the USR drivers aren't actually needed, but are a bit better than the native WinMe ones.

All is well on this front.

OK, just did this.

This is what I expect to happen, and everything seems to install just fine... but yet I am not allowed to select a modem, still.
Haha, this problem is quite frustrating. There doesn't seem to be any reason for it not to be showing up. Maybe something is screwy with the way the registry is being handled.
Alright...install it one more time, this time after it is installed open Hyperterminal.
And go through the stuff listed here...

If the modem responds appropriately then you can try to manually set up the connection...

Yup, I've done this, everything is ok.

This is what is not working for me. It won't list any modem so I can't select one to setup a connection.
It doesn't even list "Direct to Com1" as an option?
Then you may have to remove/reinstall Dial Up Networking as a whole...

Yeah, I'd removed and reinstalled Dial Up Networking to no avail. It was getting frustrating so I just formatted and reinstalled Windows. Problem solved.
Anyways, thanks for the help.
