In a separate thread in the Windows forum I described the situation with my Toshiba Portege 2000 which uses a small 1.8" HDD and which has totally crashed beyond repair. Thanks to the very valuable help form Paul and Mini-Me, I now know a little more about this machine and what type of HDD I need to replace the defective one with. I am reluctant to add to that thread because what started as a Windows issue has become a laptop issue.

Here (http://sdd.toshiba.com/localcache/820000000a6e000003bf0000000100000000.pdf#search='t oshiba%20HDD1364') is a link to a spec sheet for the drive that is currently in my machine that needs to be replaced.

So I'm browsing around eBay looking for one and I see many auctions for Toshiba 1.8" HDDs but they all mention that they're for use in an ipod. "Toshiba 1.8 in. Hard Drive 20GB same model as iPod 4G" and so forth. OK, I'll confess that I'm in my early 50's and don't use an ipod--for that matter neither does my teenage son--and I don't know how they work or what goes inside them. I don't want to buy something that won't work in my Toshiba Portege 2000. Can I get one of these things made for (or removed from) an ipod that has the same model number as a Toshiba hard drive and will it work in my Portege? Does a HDD made for a laptop also work in an ipod? This laptop was given to me precisely because the HDD crashed and a new one from Toshiba is $200. I'm not willing to pay that for a freebie machine, but if I can get a cheap HDD on eBay I'll do so. Then after I get my laptop working I may be inspired to buy an ipod and figure out how to use it.

One of the dirty little secrets about ipods...

They are a fairly cheap hard drive with an lcd screen, a small amp and some software all built into a pretty little package,, nothing really special.

What is special about them is the packaging...

The drives are drives...so if the model numbers match, then they should work in your laptop.

The one I'm looking at on eBay has the Apple logo on it. Hmmmm. I'm assuming I can format this thing like I would a normal HDD. Right?
