I have a desktop computer that is not wireless and laptops that are wireless. I bought a Netgear WGT624 wireless router that also has placed to plug in a wire for the desktop that is not wireless. Everything works but my desktop internet is going extremely slow now and it is the one that is wired. Do all wireless routers that have plugs for wires do this or are there better ones out there? Is there a better solution for a network with some wireless and some wired?

Thanks

You have the correct setup.

The fact that your wired machine now has a slow internet connection is probably just a configuration issue.

If your machine was directly connected to the internet before you added the router, were you running a firewall on that machine?

If you were, then it could be blocking your connection to the router.

It would be helpful, if you could describe what your setup was before you added the wireless.

Also, what sort of security features of the router have you enabled?

I had a U.S. Robotics wired router that had a fire wall on it. Then I switched to the Netgear wireless that also has ports to connect the wired computer. As far as I know I don't have any fire walls on my computer. I did not install any of the security features on the Netgear router.

I found that the new Netgear did have a firewall enabled and I disabled that and it got a little better but it is still way slower than my previous router was even though my previous router was 100 mbps and this newer one is 108 mbps. My laptop running on the wireless connection is way faster than my wired computer.

I went ahead and switched the new Netgear wireless router to a Linksys wireless router and I have both wired and wireless connections that are both working great! I don't know if all Netgear are like that or if I just got a bad one.
