I have a sewing machine that actually runs on Windows CE. There is a wired ethernet card availble. This would allow me to access their online site for additional designs. It's the only way to access this site.

I have a wireless network on the main level. The sewing machine with ethernet card is on a lower level. Would a wireless access point allow me to get into the wireless network? I'm thinking that an access point that can act as a client would work. I'm looking at this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833180021)
It's cheap and looks like it might work.

Any thoughts?

There is no router that I am aware of that does not have a hard wired Ethernet port. You need either:

An electrician to run the wire in the wall with an outlet at the sewing machine and an outlet by the router and two short CAT-5e patch cables to connect o the sewing machine and the router.
A really long patch cable to connect the router to the sewing machine.
Move the sewing machine next to the router and use a short patch cable to connect to the router when you need to update you patterns.

What model sewing machine...it may be easier to see if the wired NIC can be exchanged for a wireless one. Or if there is a USB port on it...or something.

They don't make a wireless card or rather they did but you had to drop network security in order for it to work. That's unacceptable so I waited and the manufacturer, Bernina, came out with a regular ethernet card. They also have a modem but I'd rather not go that option.

classicsoftware - why wouldn't hooking the cable from the lan card into an access point work? I'm a novice when it comes to networking so I don't see why it wouldn't work.
