I can't see my two DVD/CDE drives in XP explorer. They show on the boot up screen. In device manager they show with the driver loaded but the system can't access the (error code 41?). If I go int BIOS and boot from the CD with the Windows disc that works. But I still cant see them in exploer to use them.
They have been working fine for a long time until this last week.
What happened last week?
Did you install or update anything?

I've loaded and downloaded a number of things. Since then I've reformatted my C partion of the drive and reloaded Windows XP Home. Prior to reloading I tried restore and still without success. I don't think that I can go back to last week's configuration.
So, this is a fresh install that the drives are missing in?
Have you loaded the chipset drivers for your motherboard?

I haven't loaded up any of the motherboard drivers or utilities. I've never done that before on any re install of Windows after formatting. Of course now I can't do that from the CD. What do you suggest next?
When I do check them out in device manager and withe add new hardware wizard they are there with the yell exclamation mark over the top of them. Checking them out reveals nothing other than the driver is loaded but can't find the hardware (error 41 it says).

Does this apply?
CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, Code 39, or Code 41 after you remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/en-us)
OR
Code 41 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123/en-us#E0CG0ACAAA)
OR
CM_PROB_LEGACY_SERVICE_NO_DEVICES (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/DevInst_d/hh/DevInst_d/troubleshoot_b9f67acf-e571-4680-b163-c3cbf3b870ac.xml.asp)

Thanks Sylvander.
I've uninstalled both DVD drives in device manager and used the add new hardware wizard to reinstall them. They were found the messages 'Found new hardware appeared' and then another message to say a problem had been encountered and the hardware may not work properly. They're still not recognised, other than the yellow ! in Device Manager. Interesting that this is happening to two DVD drives. Perhaps something on, or not on the motherboard, or whatever else is common to both but is not common to the hard drives.
Did you try the registry edit in the MSKB link?

I tried that and now I get a different error code it's Error Code 19, and I still can't see those drives.
OK...MS seems to be stuck in a rut, because that code brings us back to...

I havent read through all the links but this sounds like it could be upperfilters/lowerfilters setting in the registry that needs fixing. Some possible fixes by googling http://www.google.ie/search?hl=en&q=winxp+upperfilters+patch&btnG=Search&meta= (http://www.google.ie/search?hl=en&q=winxp+upperfilters+patch&btnG=Search&meta=)
and using a registry "patch".

SEE CODE 19 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123/en-us#E05P0ACAAA)
Paul
The Upper/Lower Filters registry edit was suggested by THIS (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/en-us) webpage, and John did it and then got the CODE 19 error.

A big thank you to everyone who helped solve my problem. MJC the link to the club.cdfreaks got the result. Sylvander you were spot on too, my execution wasn't great. Thanks again. John :)
heres what u do.
first uninstall the hardware in your device manager.
then make a new notepad txt document and enter this into it.
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-
then save the text document as NoFilter.reg
right click NoFilter.reg and click Merge.
then restart your machine.
When u boot back up windows will reinstall the hardware and it should work correctly.

Sorry for butting-in earlier but I saw this thread just as I was about to go out. It is just common when optical devices suddenly "vanish" from My Computer but do appear in Device Manager for it to be a noide problem with Win9x and a filters problem with Win2K/XP. The easiest fix for the latter is a registry patch which I knew was out there somewhere. Anyways good that it got fixed - MANUALLY in the end since it only takes one error or the wrong format in notepad under winxp for it to fail! ;)
