Come on Jon, give it a while, an hour and a half isn't much time. Just because I seem to lurk around here all the time doesn't mean everyone else does too! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I haven't used either card so I can't give a personal opinion on them but if you have a little patience I'm sure that someone will have more to say on the matter...

Jon,

I own an AWE64 Gold and a card similar to the Montego using Aureal A3D. Both are good performers and the A3D card is impressive for gaming when mated to a quality set of speakers. I'd recommend going with which ever one you can get for the best price.

jon,

Although I "Wouldnt Recommend Either One".......I have had some problems in the past with Montego cards locking up the system, and also (If you play any) some compatibilty problems with older DOS based games.....they have definate advantages over the AWE as far as sound quality...so its a trade off stability for sound quality......but as I said in the beginning of this post I wouldnt recommend either one.......If someone offered to "Give" me one of the two of those cards "Free" and gave me a choice, I guess Id have to choose the stability of the AWE over what you gain with the Montego............

Hope this helped!

EDIT: As a matter of fact, I have one of those Montego cards upstairs in a drawer, and the only reason I dont "Throw it away", is just in case I need a sound card real quick and dont care what it is........

I dont like either card and would go for either the sblive xgamer and if not enough cash go for the sblive value.

Also just a note since aware brought it up. I had problems with my soundcard freezing up my system and that asnwer to that was to move the soundcard a slot since my video card and sound card where sharing the same IRQ or if you are an advanced user change the IRQs around.

Anyways thats just my opinion.

Hope this helps

jon,

If you can afford more than the $15 for the previous mentioned Sound Cards (hopefully thats all you were gonna pay)
You should probably do as Adam suggests and get "at least" a Sound Blaster Live.......
You can get one from this web site http://www.teacco.com/contacts.asp for $38 plus shipping if you call them on the phone......
and that is if you have or can get use of a credit card to order it also...

If you can afford even a little more, the Sound Blaster 5.1 (xgamer,mp3, or value, doesnt really matter that much) are even better cards, they start around $60 I think.......you should be able to find one very easily here www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com)

But if you dont have really good speakers and youre not planning on doing anything that requires surround sound.....save your money and just get the $38 card..........

SB 5 = 5 speaker surround + .1 = 1 Sub Woofer

Note to Adam....The SBLive! and other PCI sound cards lock up alot because of IRQ setting etc...but the probelms with the montego are more than just that....

When mentioned about the sblives with the 5.1 by aware you can also get an xgamer without the 5.1. (this will be cheaper) I have a sblive xgamer without 5.1 and have it hooked up via fibre optics to my stereo amp and it sounds sweet.

NOTE to Aware: ok just thought that might be the problem with those montego cards because I hate to see a good soundcard go to waste http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
