View Full Version : Which Cable

I previously had a broadband connection and had a network running between two machines using an RJ-45 twisted pair (CAT5) cable.
I have since upgraded to wireless and whilst the main machine is running fine using the Livebox, I cannot get the secondary machine to function. The wireless software has installed OK and I have connected the above cable to the Livebox Wireless Box and connected the other end of the cable into the secondary computer, run the wizard but I get a 'possibly blocked by firewall' error. There is no firewall on this machine as yet. I am no cable expert but the book tells me to use an ethernet cable (no other details). Am I using the wrong cable i.e the RJ-45 and if so, what specifically should I ask for at the shop?
Thanks for looking.

You need an Ethernet cable for each wired machine, and one from the modem to the router (which should have come with the router). A Cat5e cable, not crossover. As long as it doesn't say crossover on it you should be fine.
A crossover cable is for connecting two machines together directly. Since you have a router now you don't need that anymore.
If you are unsure at the store, ask. Anyone worth their salt should be able to make sure you get what you need.

Thanks for your reply. I now have the basics. Another problem has surfaced however. I have the main computer (WinXP) running perfectly OK wireless wise using the Wanadoo Livebox and USB Wireless adaptor. I have been told that I could save the wireless adapter for the other machine to be networked which runs on WinME and use the provided ethernet cable for the main machine. I uninstalled everything and tried to set up using the ethernet cable to connect from the Livebox to the main machine but when I plugged the ethernet cable into the machine it started searching for the network but then it came up with an error that a firewall could be stopping things but that was incorrect as all AV/Firewalls were disabled. Should the 'Local Area Connection' be disabled when trying to setup using the ethernet cable? I disabled this because it wouldn't allow me to access emails/internet when it was enabled using the USB Wireless Adapter. Also in Windows components what needs to be disabled or enabled in:
Internet Gateway Device Device Discovery
Peer to Peer
RIP Listener
Simple TCP/IP Services
UPnP User Interface
Many thanks for your help

Hmm, after some googling I see there have been many complaints about the Wanadoo Livebox. Many about having problems with networking and other connection problems. :(
I see now that it is not a traditional router but a hybrid of different components.
You might want to have a look through this Livebox forum. That's probably your best bet. You may be able to find a solution or maybe start a new thread there. http://forums.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/forum_topics.asp?FID=22
Sorry I can't be more help with this. :(
