I am upgrading the memory in my computer. It is a Pentium II, 266MHz computer w/ 68MB SDRAM (168-pin module) and 3 DIMM slots. Two of the slots have sticks in them (I assume 32MB). I installed a 128MB into the third slot, but it was never recognized when computer was booted. Any suggestions?

Some more systems specs would be helpful.

Are you sure that your motherboard can support both the size/type of RAM that you are trying to install?

Most motherboards can support only a certain amount of RAM, total and per slot if the maximum is exceeded then it wil not be recognized, also there is achance the new stick is bad, if you have another computer to try it in then will help narrow it down.

Welcome, mkcole! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Try removing the old DIMM's and installing just the new stick
in the lowest # slot -- 0 or 1, whatever your's is.

If that works, then leave it there and add the old sticks back in,
one at a time.

Thanks for the response. My users manual states it can handle up to 384MHz. I would believe that would mean that it should handle the 128MB in each slot. But I will try your suggestion.

Thanks for the reply. My user manul states it will handle up to 384MB with SDRAM. Could it have something to do with the bus? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Unless you try the new ram by itself as mjc and tjay both mentioned, to determine if it's bad, you won't be able to eliminate that as a possibility...

If your board supports 384mb then yes, it should recognize a 128mb module...some boards require that the largest module be in the first ram slot, so in any event, you're gonna have to pull out the old memory to test the new one...

If the memory is good and works in the first slot, then all you have to do is put the others back...if it doesn't, it could either be the wrong kind of ram or just be burned out...sometimes you get a bad one...

As far as the bus speed, the P2@266 runs at 66mhz fsb, so that's probably not the issue, but are you sure you didn't buy a registered dimm or an ecc dimm? They are not supported on some boards...
