It refers to driving around with a laptop or PDA looking for wireless signals to steal.

so it's basicly just bumming off of someone's internet? is there any threat to my computer if i'm firewalled & etc.?

If you are using encryption, security key and a password you should be fine from most passer-byers. MAC address filtering helps as well, but for a dedicated cracker he/she can get in if they really want to. But will they usually pass on the ones that have proper security and go for the totally unsecured ones. ;)

I have two unsecured signals from someone in the neighborhood that show up on my laptop. I have been meaning to find out who it is and tell them to use some security. ;)

Oh, I believe I heard somewhere that they recently passed a law making it a felony to connect to an unsecured wireless signal that does not belong to you.

cool. all of that is good to hear, esp. the law-in-progress. i also notified a few of my neighbors on my street about their un-encrypted wireless networks and they promptly secured them.

thanks for all the info!

Unfortunately, laws don't stop crooks.
