Hi,
I have a Acer Aspire 5004WLMi that is 3 months old. I had activated the BIOS setup password. Later I wanted to disable it so I went to the BIOS menu and changed the passwords (user and administrator). However I did not disable the option for setup password. Therefore I ended up with the user and admin passwords cleared and the BIOS requiring a password to bootup. I thought that once the passwords are cleared the BIOS will not require a password.
When I booted up the blank password and the old password were not being accepted. I did not know what to do so a friend and me opened the laptop partially but could not reach the CMOS battery.
We used a pen knife to disconnect the battery to reset the BIOS. At the end of the exercise the BIOS was cleared.
What I want to know is (a) Is this problem with the BIOS an universal problem. This laptop has a Phoenix NetBIOS Version 4 Release 6. (b) Did the BIOS get cleared because the laptop battery was removed? or was it because the BIOS battery was disconnected? (c) Now the laptop does not retain the BIOS information if the power supply and laptop battery is removed. Have I damaged the BIOS battery/motherboard ?
Thanks in advance.
Regards and greetings
