I need some upgrade advice. I am running a two year old PIII500 with Windows 98, and I want to add 1394 IEEE Firewire to my system, to make use of the Maxtor 80GB Firewire Hard Drive and get into video.

I bought a Western Digital Firewire card, but when I read the instructions, I learned it needed to have Windows 98 Second Edition in order to support Firewire.

I cannot find software to upgrade Win98 to Win98SE anywhere around; all I find is upgrades from Win95, or complete Win98SE operating systems. I tried to order the upgrade CD (for $19.95) from Microsoft, but it is on backorder until sometime in June.

Microsoft is pitching an upgrade to Win Millenium, but I'm uneasy about that; I have lots of digital music software and I'm not sure it would all work if I upgraded to ME. I am happy with Win98; I just want to add Firewire support.

Any suggestions regarding how to do this upgrade, possible pitfalls, problems, suggestions as to how to proceed would be greatly appreciated

Welcome Al, from a fellow Bay area resident.
Did a quick look on Pricewatch (http://www.pricewatch.com) and found it.
Good luck

They say to eat before you go to the grocery store so you don't buy so much. That doesn't work at the liquor store does it!

Can you not get what you want as free DL updates to 98 on MS website.

Personally we have done quite a few ME installations and if you install over 98 it seems quite dodgy but if you do a fresh install it seems fine

You can do a fresh intsall with an upgrade disk, (format C, intstall ME when it ask you to point it to 98, place 98 disk in Cd and point it to it, no 98 files are installed and you only plyed for an upgrade).

Price Combat (http://www.pricecombat.com./) is another good site to check, watch out for shipping prices on either, if a shipping price is not listed chances are you're better off paying a few bucks more and getting shipping at half as much...CSO (http://www.computersurplusoutlet.com/) sometimes has copies of win98, but not all the time. Some vendors also have it but only with the purchase of a motherboard or hard drive.

From what I've heard you can get all the updates from Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com) and what you end up with is basically win98 SE without Internet Connection Sharing, but i can't verify that. Best thing I can tell you i sread up on the updates and see if one adds firewire support.
