When building a web server, what hardware is generally needed? Can it be done with an ATX platform or does one need an elaborate backplane system. What are some storage requirements?

heya dog,
you can make a server out of a 486 if you want to, its just a matter of what you want it to do or what you want it to be. Recently Gateway had a package for sale, 933 dual processor, 512Mb ram, 9gb scsi hdd, server kit for $500. The MoBo alone in that setup was worth over $300 (ASUS board). They took it off of their site, but if you call them on the phone you can still get it. They got pelted with orders so they had to remove it from the web site. 3 year parts waranty and 1 year in house service.

You can run a web server with a 486 & Linux/Apache -- if you're doing static content and don't plan on serving more that 500 hits or 1MB per hour. That's plenty for a lot of purposes, including learning all the issues involved. You need to understand about your internet connection and DNS and routing and things like that if you want to do more.
