I'm going to try one of those wireless network adapters that plugs into the USB port in my desktop. The computer will be about 40 ft. from the router with two walls between them. The router is a Linksys Wireless G, 2.4 GHz, 54Mbps.
It looks like the two major vendors are Hawking and Linksys. Do any users have good or bad recommendations about either manufacturer? Also, do you recommend one that connects with a cable allowing movement for a better signal or doesn't that really improve reception over the kind that look like a flash drive and just plugs into the USB?
Thanks,

Tough one there Relztrah! I'm not sure about the ability of either to penetrate...or go around two walls and travel 40 feet...
Antenna booster are available. I'm a Linksys guy and am enamored with their tech-support...

I have a Belkin USB adapter on the upstairs floor with the router downstairs. Seems to do just fine.

Got a Netgear WG111v2 USB adapter that works between the back of the house downstairs and the upstairs front bedroom.
As the crow flies about 75ft (assuming it could fly through walls of course)..:D :D
But 3 walls and a ceiling in between them with good signal strength..
Edit:
Don't know much about this subject as I only got this adapter with the router kit I bought the other day..
BUT...I live in an old house and 2 of the above mentioned walls are 18 inches thick and made of stone, the other is just a board wall.. :D

My Linksys USB adapter seems to do pretty well also...
Not sure how effective these are but the concept is surely provocative...

I'd go with a Linksys router myself. They have decent tech support and I've transported it to 3 different houses and each one had tons of walls and floors to pass through and still had excellent signal strength. I have never had a problem with linksys hardware either.

I've had my Netgear setup going a couple of weeks now and it seems fine..
As per usual..the main problems I have encountered have been due to my own ignorance of the subject.. :D :D
Never mind..onwards and upwards on the learning curve we go!..

Since you have a Linksys router, I would get a Linksys adapter. It's easier to call tech support whne they are both by the same manufacturer.

I would try belkin and Linksys.
Personaly I would try to get a PCMCIA/PCI Adapter then go USB since they have stronger antanna's....because usb is size and very power limited (because people dont want to carry huge usb adapters)
As for the wall thing, I would try optimizing the space between the router and the client (this case the USB adapter your talking about..) It should be fine as long as it is within 1500ft for Wireless B (11mbps) and 400ft for Wireless G (54mbps) distince shouldnt matter much if you plan to use the client computer just for internet browsing, downloading little files and email/instant messaging...
if you plan to be sharing files, then I would recommond getting as close as you can....but the walls would hurt the G alot..
