I have a Linksys WRTP54G in one end of the house, on channel 3, and
a Linksys WAP54G at the other end of the house, on channel 11. The
WAP54G is years old, but the firmware is updated to v3.04, October 31, 2005.

I have two laptops, each running XP, that are dog slow in the room
with the WAP54G. While connected to channel 11, you can run
dslreports.com/speedtest and get great results, similarly Doctor Ping,
and yet just loading yahoo.com or cnn.com, or watching videos, it
stops and starts, takes 15 seconds to load a yahoo page, etc.

Stepping out of the room, picking up the weaker and more remote signal
on channel 3, the video snaps to or the web page finishes loading
immediately.

How can I debug this?

More confusing data/clues: I have a third laptop, a Powerbook G4,
that runs perfectly well on channel 11 in the room with the WAP54G.
Also elsewhere in the house using channel 3.

If you turn OFF the WAP54G, in that room the two XP laptops will
work pretty well on the weak channel 3, much better than they work
on the WAP54G when it is turned on. The Powerbook, however,
will occasionally see (MacStumbler) channel 3, but never enough
to actually load a web page. It does not work at all on the weaker,
distant channel 3, when in the furthest room (with the turned off
WAP54G).

All three laptops work fine elsewhere in the house, on channel 3.

Any suggestion of how to debug this?

Thanks,
Marla

What other wireless devices (that might be in the 2.4 GHz range) do you have?

How far apart/how many walls, etc are between the two?

What cards are in the laptops?
