I have a laptop ibm r50e
windows xp
I can get into BIOS setup
The problem i m facing
When i boot the laptop it can only get to the windows logo and then hang there
Last known good configuration has the same result
Booting in safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, safe mode with networking hangs after loading a certain file mup.sys
Whenever i tried booting from the windows XP CD
i get to a screen with only a cursor, the dvd drive appear to spin and then stop and just hang there.
Even when i dont put a CD in the drive
i also get to a screen with only a cursor, the dvd drive appear to spin and then stop and just hang there.
Normally it should get start windows if no CD is detected. I have checked the disc to be bootable on a PC
The recover utilty provided by default is access IBM(no disc is provided)
when i choose to run it, it also hanged when the please wait messages appeared below.
Since the laptop doesnt have a floppy disc drive and I dont have a USB floppy disc drive or HDD drive or flash drive, i couldn't try to format the hdd and re-install windows
I have removed the hdd and reinsert it back, same with the dvd drive
Still no solution
I would like to know your opinions about whether it is hardware related or software related problems that I am facing here.
Do i need to post details of my BIOS settings?

BOOTING FROM BOOTABLE CD's
Is your BIOS Setup configured to boot the CD-drive first?
Is the XP CD known to work as a bootable CD?
Does it work in another PC?
Have you tried any other bootable CD's?

After you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), your computer may unexpectedly stop, and you may receive the following error: stop:0x00000082 (0xF85316FC, 0xf852951c, 0x000000000,0x00000000) mup.sys - address f85316FC base at F85230000, datestamp 40f09d2e mup.sys - address f852951C base at F85230000, datestamp 40f09d2e (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885443/en-us)
Looks like this is a bug in Windows that requires a hotfix.
I wonder if this then affects a bootable WinXP CD because the program that loads from the CD interacts with the WinXP installation?
Try booting a non-Windows bootable CD to see what happens.
Did you install the WinXP OS onto the USB Flash Drive whilst it was connected to some other PC?
If so, it would be set up for use on that other PC's hardware and not this laptop.
Therefore, even though your laptop were capable of booting from a USB device/drive, it wouldn't be capable of working with the laptop hardware.

"you mean a linux or dos..."
The following EBCD boots DOS...
How to make a free EBCD bootable CD
http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=41485
This has a number of useful utilities included including "Image" [for DOS, by Terabyte] & "File Manager".
"Since the laptop doesnt have a floppy disc drive and I dont have a USB floppy disc drive or HDD drive or flash drive, i couldn't try to format the hdd and re-install windows"
The EBCD [if it succeeds in booting] includes a DOS 7.10 command prompt at which you can run fdisk and format commands.
You could use its "MS Scandisk" to scan the file system and fix any problems found.
If your BIOS supports access to USB devices you might find that "Image" will be able to make an image backup of your C: partition direct to your USB flash drive [if it's big enough], or else make it to a partition on your HDD and use Knoppix to transfer it. There's a program [TBIview] that works within Windows and can restore files to Windows from within the image file.
You could do this before you repartition and/or reformat and reinstall Windows.
And...
the BOOTABLE KNOPPIX CD (http://www.knoppix.org/) loads this Linux based OS from the CD and runs it from there.
You could get back on line [using Firefox for example] using this until you get Windows working again.

phoenix first bios notebook pro version 2.0 for ibm thinkpad
cpu=intel pentium m processor 1.5ghz
633k system ram passed
246m extended ram passed
2048k cache sram passed
system bios shadowed
video bios shadowed
umb upper limit segment address: DC00
mouse initialized
initializing intel boot agent version 4.1.07
pxe 2.1 build 083 (win 2.0)
everything is detected in the BIOS correctly
i think there is something wrong with the cd-rom drive, i have tried the ebcd boot disk and knoppix 4.0 live cd.
i only get a blank black screen with a flashing cursor(like that of a prompt).
When the laptop is started, i can hear the cd-rom drive started spinning and then stop. or when i inserted a cd, it started spinning and then stop.
regardind the USB flash drive
you said something about the windows xp set up in other pc not capable of being run in laptop...you are quite correct...
i manage to boot the pc with the USB flash windows xp installed using bart pe(peinst.cmd) but when i tried it on a laptop i can only get to the windows logo and then everything hang...
do you have any idea what happen that cause the hang?

Do the EBCD and Knoppix CD's boot ok on any other computer? [Are they properly made and tested as functional?]
Did you run a CD burning application and use "File->Create CD from Disk Image" or similar.
You must not just burn a copy of the iso file to the CD as though it were an audio file.
When you boot the laptop, can you make it display its auto-detection of your drives?
[My PC displays the drive detection but I must hit "Esc" to get rid of the splash screen to see the display behind.]
Is there an LED on your DVD-drive?
During the POST you should see the LED blinking [communication between BIOS and drive], not a constant glow [no communication], and see it correctly identified on screen.
At the point where the laptop would normally begin loading Windows from the HDD...
If there is a bootable CD in the DVD drive...
You should see the led blinking as the CD is read and the OS loaded into RAM.
I've heard of cases where, due to a hardware fault, a DVD drive will not read or burn CD's.
At the point where there appears to be a problem loading from the CD, the BIOS is in control of the DVD-drive.
So it's either a problem with the disk, or the BIOS, or the hardware.
"i manage to boot the pc with the USB flash windows xp installed using bart pe (peinst.cmd) but when i tried it on a laptop i can only get to the windows logo and then everything hang..."
It aught to be booted only on the particular set of hardware on which it was installed. You said that it was installed on the laptop, so it should really only be booted on that.
I'm surprised that it booted successfully on a PC on which it was never installed; fortunate chance I guess.
For a USB device to boot an OS, the BIOS on that machine must support booting from USB devices.
"do you have any idea what happen that cause the hang?"
What I know suggests it would have to be a Windows problem.
Once Windows begins loading, anything at or after that point isn't a hardware or BIOS problem, but a Windows problem.
It has me puzzled. :(

the knoppix cd and ebcd booted successfully on PC.
about the dvd drive
the dvd drive is the first boot device in the BIOS
when i boot the laptop
the dvd drive blink for a few seconds
i get this screen
phoenix first bios notebook pro version 2.0 for ibm thinkpad
cpu=intel pentium m processor 1.5ghz
633k system ram passed
246m extended ram passed
2048k cache sram passed
system bios shadowed
video bios shadowed
umb upper limit segment address: DC00
mouse initialized
the dvd drive appear to spin during the extended ram test and then stop
the next screen i get is
initializing intel boot agent version 4.1.07
pxe 2.1 build 083 (win 2.0)
press ctrl+s to enter setup menu
after a single beep
i get to a blank screen with a blinking cursor
the dvd drive led does not blink or light up at all
Sound like it is a hardware problems?
