View Full Version : Is there a Good Low $ CD Burner?
Is it necessary to buy an HP for $150 or more to have
a good CD burner? I heard Philips has one for $75.

What speed are you looking for?
A good place to look is PriceCombat (http://www.pricecombat.com./) or PriceWatch (http://www.pricewatch.com/IEHomePage.htm)

Celts are the men that heaven made mad, For all their battles are merry and their songs are all sad.
Not sure what speed I want, more interested in buying a
good quality CD burner for much less than $150.
For ocassionally backing up my files. Maybe some music.

I've seen cd burners as low as $75 at Best Buy, but I'm dubious as to the quality and you're definitely taking your chances shopping at Best Buy. I think basically you'll find that ya get what ya pay fer when it comes to this kind of thing. If I were in your position, (and I'm not) I would probably shop in the 100-120 range and look for a name I've at least heard of (Sony, Phillips, Mitsumi)and save the receipt.

Make everything as simple as possible, but no simpler.
My local Wal-Mart has a HP9150 for $99...it is an 8x4x32.

That's low for an HP. What is the Write speed?
I finally went to pricewatch.com and found a Mitsumi
CR4805 (8x32 write/read) for $80.

Hello bil,
I was waiting a little bit before I answered this, and Im going to try not to say a whole lot, because I have some pretty strong opinions about CD Burners etc which in the past have turned into slightly less then civilized debates on the subject lmao, but Id like to offer at least "some" advice on the issue. If you look on pricewatch and search CD Burners by "mfg" you will find several Yamaha and Plextor Drives for under $150.
Beware of some of the "older" models that are still for sale, and they are asking quite alot of money for some of these old drives, but they have some pretty good deals on some pretty good newer drives.
Id recommend either the 8824 Yamaha $123 <-(This one I personally know is a very good drive), or the 16x Yamaha 2100E $129, and they also have the 12x Plextor $143.
Mitsumi Drives I usually hear good things, but don't have any personal experience with Mitsumi Burners (They are definately not the best). Im fairly certain that HP Drives are actually made by Sony, and usually the things I hear about HP's are pretty good (Not the best but good enough). Id recommend staying away from Philips.
Hope this helps, and hope the Mitsumi turns out to be a good one if thats what you end up buying...
Good Luck!
Thank you AwARe. I appreciate all the info. Others
have said to stay away from Philips also. Mitsumi is
in the same price range anyhow. I will probably go with
the Mitsumi if it will allow me to at least back up my
files without problems.
