I have the same problem with Word 2000 (and have for at least 4 -5 months). I can delete single letters but not words (type a letter then immidiately backspace it). My work-a-round is to delete each letter individually. I am too lazy to look for a proper solution  . I can use the back sapce & delete key with other programs without problems so this is not too much of a problem.

I successfully did it on my PC whilst running Filemon.exe & Regmon.exe.
Your files and keys may differ slightly.
Only 2 files being accessed as shown in the Filemon.txt file.
[B]C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE\WINWORD.EXE
C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE\WWINTL32.DLL
Look in your registry for similar keys being accessed as shown in the Regmon.txt file.
Interesting to note:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\CUSTOM.DIC"
This file exists on my PC in the location specified.

See if double-clicking the word rather than dragging the mouse to highlight the text makes a difference.
After being highlighted will .. RClick and Cut .. or.. the key combination of CTRL+X .. or commands from the edit menu ..delete the word?
PS This can apparently be by design if the Work Perfect "Navigation Keys for Word Perfect Users" and/or "Help for WordPerfect users" or something similar has been enabled on the Tools >> Options >> General Tab. Delete and the Home keys dont work and backspace has to be pressed twice.

Paul
Just check the general tab and HELP for WORD PERFECT had been selected. I removed the tick form the box and every thing back to normal now (delete & backspace keys working as they should)
Thanks

yeah, the only work-around i found was the ctrl+backspace that deletes the entire word.
i'll let'cha know if i discover anything.

Has anyone found increasing and incurable problems with the following Microsoft “Wonders of the World”?
Microsoft Word 2003: And these are just a couple of issues: Font problems pertaining to formatting, font face selection and font size? It seems I have to work much harder to get my final results than I did even six or five years ago.
Microsoft Excel 2003: Creating a customized toolbar under the "Tools" menu and when you click OK, all that was selected to be included simply disappears.
I have reinstalled Office 2003 twice, with no improvement. I suspect there may have been some MS downloads which were botched. Or, Microsoft had some defective downloads. (Last I checked, Gates doesn't have any scars on the palms of HIS hands!!) It may only be me, so that’s why I’m asking the question. Used Excel and Word for many, many years and many predecessors since the 70's.
What do you think?
Has anyone found an acceptable, viable alternative to these programs? Like Google’s Word Processing "Writely"
http://www.pandia.com/sew/186-google-buys-online-word-processor.html
or Google’s Spreadsheet? Called "Google Spreadsheet"
https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=wise&passive=true&nui=1&continue=http%3A%2F%2Fspreadsheets.google.com%2Fcc c%3Fnew
Let me know if you have found others. Or perhaps Google is the way to go in the future for limited WP and XLS work
