because no question is a dumb question?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

which leads me to ask this question.
I have a friend with verizon dsl and she has a sneaky lowlife neighbor who has joked about connecting to the internet through her connection (verizon dsl w/ a westell modem). He said something about having a router that can do this.? All in all, i told her, for her piece of mind, to just disconnect the power source from her modem. Would doing that eliminate the possibility of him connecting through hers? Is it illegal in any way for someone to even do this?

Welcome to The PC Guide! :)

If she has a wireless capable modem or other device, it may be possible for him to do just that, certainly if the wireless signal does not have encryption. Turning the modem off should certainly prevent unauthorised access. Without wireless would require physical access to her hardware.

Is it illegal in any way for someone to even do this?

Without her permission, yes since the neighbour woul be stealing part of her service.

Technicly according to most ISP DSL/Cable install contracts it is usualy illegal for her to broadcast the wireless signal.

This subject has a very fine undefined line hehe
