hello...i have a p4 pc and i was trying a different ram on it...i usually have 1.25 gb ddr400 ram....so i was going to try this skinny looking ram and i took off the regular ones....when i put the skinny one i dunno if it clicked in properly or not...the thing is that i turned on my pc and after 3 or 4 seconds the pc shut off and some burning smell came out....after when i put the regular ram i use and push the ON button it doesnt turn on....could this be the power supply??? if someone knows what could be the problem please let me know so i dont go and buy a new power supply for no reason......thank you

From your description things don't sound very hopeful.
Generally, shutting down with a burning smell is a BAD THING.
Are you sure that the memory stick you wre playing with was the proper type for your systems? If it wasn't, it could very well have shorted both itself and the motherboard, hence the 'burning' smell....

My friend trying unknown parts of any kind on a computer is not really a thing that I would do. I'm no expert and I don't know if putting the wrong RAM in a motherboard can do what you are talking about but I would start looking for a new computer. Do you have a multimeter or voltage meter to test the power supply? That might tell you if your power supply(PSU) is working? As mjc says burning smells are not a good thing at all. I sincerely hope your computer is ok and it's just a small part that needs to be replaced. Best wishes.
