Howdy

I have just gotten the last of the parts I need to put together a basic
computer for myself. Nothing fancy I just want to have some fun
and get some experience.

P3-850
AOpen MX3S mobo 815E chipset ( onboard everything )
256MB PC133 SDRAM ( The CPU runs at 100 but I got the 133 just incase)
Maxtor 7200 rpm 30GB HD
Creative 12•10•32 CD-RW
generic Floppy
Mouse , keyboard, and monitor from an old system I was given
I think I will buy a full version of 98SE.( the HP came with those darn
recovery CD's http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif )

I have read many post here and the assembly section of the PCGuide.

I might try and network this with my current HP but that's another matter
and assumes I get this one running http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Any extra little tips before I start would be greatly appreciated

I know it sounds really Noddy but use an earthing strap and de-magnetised tools... saves alot of heartache...

A second on the HP recovery cd. It will not work in this PC.

The onboard video is going to be really bad, too. You may be able to live with it, but in my experience, even the cheapest pci card would be better.

Thanks Bailey

I will buy a retail version of 98SE

The onboard video atleast for the time being will be fine. I do no gaming.
The onboard video that is in my HP now is fine for me and the new mobo's video is "supposed" to be much better. (we'll see if my leg is being pulled or not.) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I'm in shock. Three nights and it works.Of course it has only been running for an hour. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif Win98SE loaded fine. It's pretty awesome how uncluttered a fresh install looks. All I have ever seen is all the crap that came loaded on the HP.

Well if it has worked for an hour you've probably cracked it. Leave it on overnight doing something menial as a burn-in test. If you're really brave download some diagnostics programs or a dedicated burn-in app. and put some strain on your new beasts components.
Personally I'd just leave well alone and celebrate with a beer.
