Usb devices wont work unless they are plugged in prior to boot up , if you plug one in when windows is up & running it either does nothing or says unknown device .
Win xp
kvn2 msi mainboard
512 k ram
60 gb hd
1.8 cpu
all windows updates ok
no excalmation marks in device man
however there is 5 unknown devices under USB

R-click on the unknown USB devices and click "update driver". Let windows search the internet for the drivers.
That should do it. :)

Yup, jlreich was right. By the way, if your removable disk is not recognized by Windows, I mean the brand, it'll be quite hard to search through internet. The better way is you analyze your removable disk, what brand it is and search the driver through some website such as www.driverguide.com. Then right click the yellow mark of 'Unknown device' in your device manager, and then 'update driver' through local folder which containing the driver you had downloaded. Give it a try ^.^

It does not matter what brand it is , as I said if I put the usb devices in before I boot up they will be recognised , but once windows is running they wont ,& if I take out one of the devices & replug it then it will not work either.

I ever faced so before. You can check whether your removable device is deteced bt your Windows or not actually. You go to Device Manager and have a look please. It shall show up something like Unknown Device although Windows doesn't inform you about it. Just have a try about this.

Actually I don't think it would be the USB devices themselves, but rather the USB hub does not have the proper drivers installed. Once you get the drivers loaded for the USB hub everything else should non longer be a problem.
Did you reinstall windows recently?

Guys thanks for all the suggestions I have fixed it more by luck than skill. I disabled 1 of the host controllers which the device always tried to install to & all now is working . I did previously try driver updates ect but to no avail . That port must have had some conflict or was not working , however all the other 5 usb ports are fine . Thanks again.
