I have read in several places that the only difference between the original 98 and 98 second edition is service pack 1. Is this true? Since I have 98, and recently received a CD from MS with Service Pack 1, I would not need to buy 98se if the above is true.

As far as I understand, SP1 has bug fixes, but not the additional features of SE...
They couldn't justify charging you to fix the problems, but they can charge you for extra functionality...

Seems to me: Win98SE has internet connection sharing (and some other network feature I don't remember). Unless you need this, just keep current with the MS updates.

Here is a link from M$ with the info you are looking for. For the most part, you can download the enhancements. For some reason I remember (at the time) that 98 second edition was much better at supporting firewire and USB (perhaps 1.1 comapred to 1.0 USB?) than 98 but I'm not 100% sure. In any case, my experience has been that once you patch the living hell out of it, 98se runs more reliable than "plain old" 98. I'm sure others will disagree; my only point is to seriously consider patching it to the max if you go the 98se route. Good luck.

My understanding of SP1 is that it does include the increased support for USB and such. (Just looked on CD and just said "enhanced software and hardware support for 98".) Will go and read the article posted by psabi and hopefully find out what "features" are not included (as mentioned by hired).
Thanks, everyone!

Win98 + SP1[+ all updates after SP1 until 98SE came out] = Win98 SE minus Internet Sharing[modem sharing], Explorer 5.0 and a few other minor things not worth mentioning.

Thanks, Randy. That's pretty much what I had figured too after reading the above articles. Raises another question, though. We have such a slow ISP connection that we try to avoid the need to download anything..if possible. So, the indication here might be that would be wise to go ahead and buy the upgrade so as to avoid downloads? But are there also a bunch of downloads/patches/fixes for 98se too?
Want to thank everyone too for NOT suggesting other OS's!
