Welcome, qwerty43. Hate to rain on your first post, but the guys will need to know what kind of motherboard you have now to answer your question.

If you are inquring because you have a system purchased off the shelf (like an HP, eMachines, Compaq etc) then if you change the motherboard you will need to acquire a full install of your OS (operating system), because the restore disk that came with the system will only work with the current MOBO....
Also if you have an HP Pavilion then you need to wait a while, they are currently undergoing research into a BIOS problem that only allows certain boards to handle upgrading...but if it ever gets straightened out you sholud be able to go upto at least a 700 Celeron..maybe higher or even a PIII....

I am assuming you do not have a manual for your mobo because if you did, you could look in there and it will say what kind and speed of chip your board supports. You need your ID string so that you can find the manufacturer and model of your board. Go HERE (http://www.wimsbios.com/), click on Bios Numbers, and it will walk you through the steps of getting that ID string. Once you have that, and know the manufacturer of your board, hopefully you can find a manual or specs from the manufacturer. (If yours turns out to be Vision Top Tech..like mine..we're in trouble!) Or repost here with the information and maybe we can help.

Sorry, experiencing stupidity this morning. After you have your ID string, you can go MBHW (http://www.motherboards.org/moboidtools.html)and get your manufacturer..and it may even get you to a manual for your mobo.
