Ihave a 2 yr old Micron Millenia 350 with a 8 gig HD and would like to
upgrade to a 20 gig Maxtor ATA 7200 drive. Can I do this? Not sure what the hard dive i have now is.
Thanks for any help
Fred
Well the first thing that I would do is go to Micron Support (http://support.micronpc.com/apps/faqhub.asp?Docnum=1074) and identifiy which motherboard is in it, also you may be able to find info on the support site as to whether that machine will support such a large drive, if there is a BIOS revision to allow support for it, or if you need to use an "overlay" - usually provided by the drive manufacturer (either with the drive or available for downloading off their site).

Hi Fred
Sounds like a good idea to do the upgrade. Shouldn't be too big a problem. You will probably need to check to see what your motherboard is and if it will support the larger hard drive. My guess is that you will have to upgrade (flash) the BIOS. This is not difficult to do but can be tricky if you have had little or no experience.
WimsBios (http://www.wimsbios.com/) is a great place for info on your mobo and bios.
There is also a good ZDNet (http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/stories/solutions/0,8224,2586419,00.html) article on upgrading the HDD on a two yrear old micron. Sounds like just what you need.

Don't know how much your heart is set on a maxtor, but Western Digital drives come with a utility that runs on boot and lets you use the drive no matter how big it is...
I wouldn't be positive that it will matter though...I installed a 30gb drive into a 2 1/2 yr old P2 350 system and I didn't have to do anything except plug it in...
