I purchased a used AMD Duron CPU, socket A on EBAY. It came with a fan and heatsink. On the enclosed sheet was a note, thermal compound not used. Before I install the cpu, is this correct? If not how much thermal compound do I need? Will just a very small amount on the center be sufficient?

Yes you need some thermal grease. Do not install the CPU without any. Get some Arctic Silver and follow these instructions. http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm

Thanks, Making progress maybe; at least I know the cpu is functional. :-)

If the heatsink came with a thermal pad installed, then you can just use that. If the pad has a plastic covering, then make sure to remove it before installing the heatsink.
If you prefer to use Arctic Silver(it's recommended vs. a thermal pad), then remove the pad with a credit card, followed by high purity alcohol(91% or higher) and a soft cloth, and finally apply the AS thermal compound.
Also, when installing the heatsink place the MB on a solid surface with a piece of cardboard placed between the MB and the solid surface, since a good amount of force may be needed to properly secure the heatsink's hold down clips, and the cardboard will prevent the MB from being damaged by the stress.
