Try the free version of #1-TuffTEST-Lite™ PC Diagnostic (http://www.tufftest.com/tt01-lite.htm).
The bootable floppy disk can be a little tricky to make, but once made you just boot with it in the drive and sit back and watch as the tests are done.
QUOTE
Unique Architecture Means Better Testing
#1-TuffTEST-Lite is written in assembly language (instead of a high-level language such as C).
#1-TuffTEST-Lite uses its own proprietary operating system, is self-loading, and is designed to load successfully in systems with suspected hardware malfunctions. Thus it can test a PC system regardless of its native operating system (DOS, Windows, Unix, Linux, OS/2, etc.). You can even troubleshoot a PC with no fixed disk drive!
#1-TuffTEST-Lite utilizes its own custom device drivers so that diagnostic routines interact directly with the PC's hardware. This produces precise and reliable test results that are unaltered by native operating system error recovery routines and eliminates the false positives and negatives so common with DOS/Windows-based utility-type diagnostic products.

If this is indeed a driver problem, then Tufftest will show that your video display functionality is ok since Tufftest uses its own drivers.
You will know that there's nothing wrong with the hardware. :)
