View Full Version : Lost Password?

This evening when I turned on the computer, I got the usual XP box asking for my admin password, I put the usual p/w in and got 'Have you lost your password, Click on ? to get the hint' ??? What the ??!! 'so went to ? and got the hint, "new password" But I had never changed the p/w.
I was worried that some one may have accessed the puter while I was on line and perhaps got into my internet bank a/c.
I rang my service provider and asked him to see if anyone had login after I had last evening and the times he gave were of my login times, sign sign relief.
After I had talked to the servicer provider, It suddenly accepted my usual p/w ?
Questions.
A)Is it a good idea to leave the modem switched off when you first fire up the puter? then switch off after. Is just switching off enough or is it better to unplug. Problem is that you have to be online to login to the bank anyway?
B) What causes the puter or should I say XP to lose the P/W and then suddenly remember it again? Does it indicate a hard drive on the way out? Or a registry problem?
What the best way to prevent it happening again?
Thanks

If your are keeping on-line, possibly there are some spywares in your pc which alter your files setting. It's possible for them to do so. Just make sure you have strong anti spyware and adware to reject them automatically when you are not around.
I hope I'm right, please wait other experts to solve your problems too.

First thing to do is a full scan for malware/infections. If you post your HighJack this logs here someone will check them out for you and guide you. Then after getting the all clear to be safe change your password.

It is also quite possible that you mistyped your password the first time and got it right when you got back to it...

Just what and how do I post 'your Highjack this logs' ? Can you explain how I do this.
Thanks.
No Budfred, I tried a couple dozen times and was very very careful especially after the first failed login to make sure the login was 101% correct.

"when I turned on the computer, I got the usual XP box asking for my admin password"
It's normally recommended that the user set up an ordinary user account, set the permissions for that using the Admin account, and normally use the user account rather than the Admin account.
This because it is dangerous to routinely work within an Admin account.
"a registry problem?"
I'd guess the password info is held [encrypted?] within the registry.
I don't know about XP, but earlier Windows versions were designed to automatically revert to an earlier [working] version of the registry if the present registry was causing a problem. This could cause some consternation when things suddenly don't act as are expected. :(
"I was worried that some one may have accessed the puter while I was on line and perhaps got into my internet bank a/c"
I use Acerose Password Vault (http://www.dexadine.com/acerose.html) to SECURELY and SAFELY [the prog explains the difference between these two] store all information like...
1. The TRUE web address of a site [a hacker might alter the address in your favourites to send you to a fake site where your name and password will be harvested].
2. Your name and password and other key words or phrases.
I make a point of NEVER typing these, but copy & paste instead after opening the vault.
This has more than a single advantage.
a. You never get the characters wrong.
b. A keylogger wouldn't see you type the characters, because you don't.
3. It's a GREAT [convenient] way to SAFELY store info [and of course it's SECURE too].
It's encrypted, so even you cannot access the info unless you have your name and password.
You only need to be able to remember this single set of name & password; all others are recorded inside the vault.
You MUST make backups of course, because it would be disastrous to be unable to retrieve the info.
You can use its password generator to make complex, long [more difficult to crack] passwords [I haven't got the hang of doing that myself, but I'd recommend it].

Go to the following page and download HiJack this from there.
http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html
Next place unzip the file and put it in a folder of its own on your desktop and run it, then save the log and post the FULL contents of it here for the experts to look at it.
Go to the folowing link for a quick tutorial on how to use HJT
