What version of Micorsoft Words you are using? It's possibly relevant with it.

I don't think that Microsoft Office is a freeware. Try use Microsoft Words 2000 or Microsoft 2003 if you have.
By the way, may I know what words you had typed in your older Windows? Such as Rome or Geeks, if it's foreign language you have to install extra language from your Windows XP installer. Otherwise you won't be able to see even a word in your Windows for you document.

You should have run the Windows XP Upgrade Advisor (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/advisor.mspx) BEFORE you upgraded from Win98, to find out whether any of the hardware and/or software would be incompatible with XP. :(

But I think you can also run it after the upgrade. :)

I wonder if the XP installation program automatically deleted programs [like MS Office, or Word] that would have been incompatible with XP?

You could try using the free download of OPEN OFFICE (http://www.openoffice.org/), which would be able to work with your MS Office produced documents.
HERE (http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/sys_reqs_20.html) are what it requires for proper operation.

sounds like you had installed xp with a clean install.

Is drive F still accessible?

I would also suggest Sylvander's suggestion of using Open Office since it looks like you don't have an installer of OFFICE.

There is no download of Microsoft Word that I am aware of but you can get Microsoft's Word Viewer (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=95E24C87-8732-48D5-8689-AB826E7B8FDF&displaylang=en) for free. It will let you read but not create new MS Word documents. I agree that Open Office is great freeware.

Try right click the Toolbar at top, then click on customize. Choose the options you need and left click it, hold it on and drag it to your tool bar. :p
