View Full Version : Memory
I have 64mb of DIMM EDRAM on 1 of 4 banks. Can I mix RAM - i.e., add SDRAM? Or - do I have to buy the same type of RAM that is there now - EDRAM?

I would not recommend this! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif Though in theory you might get buffered edo dram to run with sdram, i wouldn't bet on it!! You would most certainly experiance some serious instability problems! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
Do you know if your board will support sdram? most boards will support either edo dram or sdram( sdram is faster than edo, much faster than fast page). Check in your motherboards manual if you can and see what it recommends.

allrighty then ... this is where it all gets confusing to me ...
my sources (techweb - techencyclopedia) say that "EDO RAM" and "EDRAM" are two very distinctly different things. According to Techweb, EDO RAM is Extended Data Out RAM, and EDRAM is Enhanced Dynamic RAM. TechWeb's definition of EDO RAM seems to fit with your warnings, but their definition of EDRAM is simply "enhanced DRAM".
Now what? :(

As a general rule.......if the system is over 4 years old....it probably wont work [mixing the two]....if newer, it probably will. Does your motherboard support SDRAM?? That's the most important question you need the answer to......it will be found in the motherboard documentation or their website.
