View Full Version : Upgrading Windows XP
First time user so am asking for info on upgrading my Windows XP of dubious parentage.
If I purchase legit copy can I just install over the top of the one there now?
Any help?

I had the same problem with a "dubious" XP Pro PC.. did a windows update and got the message "This is not a legal copy of Windows" or words to that effect.
Went to the Genuine windows site and ordered a genuine jobby.. you get a new key via e-mail when your order clears and the CD is sent in the post.
It is possible to update your version online, but microsoft scan your installed version to ensure that the core files are "not corrupted"...
Mine were and it failed so I had to do a clean install from the new CD.
All ok and legal now of course.. just £92 poorer!!.. :D :D :D

I read recently that if you contact Microsoft and tell them where you got your illegal copy and they are satisfied that you are not culpable, then they will supply a legal copy to the user at no cost.

True.. read that on the webste somewhere..
My problem was.. didn't even know where the PC actually originated.
As for the original question you would be fine. A new install is just that, it will just overwrite whatever files are already there. I would personally recommend that you backup anything you want to keep and do a full format and install. You never know with those illegal copies of software, you might have more than you know about as in virus or other malware.
Good to hear MS will give you a free legal copy if you got an illegal copy unknowinglly. When I started readging about how they were cracking down more I was kind of thinking what would happen to the poor person who is caught in the middle of it. I mean if you don't know anything and someone sells you a PC with illegal software on it you shouldn't be held responsible for buying a new one.

Should be ok with OEM version, choose upgrad instead of new install.
