I have been tinkering with TCP/IP for the last few months, and have to say that I now like it so much more then netBEUI.

The "ping" command is wonderful, to find out if a PC or device on the network is actually talking to the network - something I had to take for granted with netBEUI.

Today, my workshop machine would not talk to the net, so I "Pinged" the ADSL router gateway, and got no responce - went to the router, and found a faulty patch lead - could not have done this easily with netBEUI, although, netBEUI is still SUPER EASY to configure and get working...

...just thought you guys would like to know I have crossed over to the other side!!!
:D

MODERATORS: Posted this here, cos it is not a network question, so I thought it did not really belong in the network forum. Move as you see fit...

Glad it is working for you.

Welcome to the world of the Internet! (TCP/IP is the internet protocol, but it also is very useful for LAN also).

Imagine trying to network a large company with 80 PCs in a building using NETBEUI, meaning 80 unique names and you can see TCP/IP is light-years ahead of NETBEUI immediately.

Yeah, that whole DHCP thing is handy! :p And NAT and ARP are essential for any net admin or hard-core online gamer!

Ever notice that most acronyms are 3 letters?

Would that be TLA (Three Letter Acronyms)?

Yes :p that would be it. 3 is the magic number I guess.
