View Full Version : I can't connect using wireless!!
I have a broadband modem connected by ethernet cable to a router, Micradigital / Belkin F5D7230. I have established a connection to the laptop via ethernet cable by setting the router to act as 'access only'.
I took note of the new IP address when saving the router settings, but I cannot access the router configuration page either on the new address or the default address.
Also, since altering the router to 'access only' I cannot establish a wireless link from laptop top to router even though the network is seen as accessible on the laptop. The connecion attempt times out while waiting for 'network connection'
Any help would be appreciated.
Dave
PS I have checked the disable switch on the laptop :)
Hello and welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif
First off, I found out the hard way, that Belkin does something eminently stupid when you put the router into AP mode...it disables access to the configuration page...to regain access you need to depress and hold the reset button for at least 30 seconds. This will reset everything to the factory defaults.

Really? That's pretty dumb. I would think that he could at least connect using a Cat5 cable, at least to access the http configuration page.
My router is not much better. Get this... it does not allow static IP addresses or port forwarding (or anything else, really). This is no lie. It is from Arcor, and the only way I can use any file sharing tools is by first finding out my new IP address each time.
Oh, I forgot something in my first post...you need to turn off the DHCP BEFORE you switch it to AP mode. You won't be able to do so afterwards. (that is possibly why you aren't being able to connect).
OK I didn't know they did that.
What was the new IP address that it gave me when I set up AP mode?
An instruction came up at the same time saying, "Change address box in he status bar of browser manually to new LAN address."? I haven't done that as I didn't understand the instruction.
I have tried the 'new' address and several others using a cat5 cable between router and laptop but cannot find the configuration page.
Without the router in AP mode I cannot get it to connect anything, Wired or wireless.
I appreciate your help.
Dave
I'll try that now MJC and post back.

I just spent this past Saturday dealing with the same router...I think that they should include a couple of sample packs of Extra Strength Tylenol in the box with it.
THAT WAS WIERD!!
I could not log on to the router as there was 'another administator' warning.
OK Rebooted, disabled DHCP. Enabled AP. Same message about new IP (not LAN) came up. Still don't understand it so I haven't done it.
Router is working as before, OK on wire but can't connect wireless, just times out 'waiting for network'. I noticed the wireless icon at bottom right of desktop does not alter during attempts to connect.

Continue tomorrow guys. Got to go to work. On nightshift. (Graveyard)

Well I had the wireless connection good this afternoon, could got the laptop to access te configuration page etc. BUT NO INTERNET.
I have tried taking out the DHCP at the router but didn't seem to help.
Have I got this right? Router is 192 168 2 1 Laptop is 192 168 2 2 or should I just leave it to windows to assign the address for the laptop?
Dave
If you are using it in normal mode, DHCP should be on and Windows should be set to automatically get the IP...
In AP mode, DHCP off...
"Using this mode will defeat the NAT IP sharing feature and DHCP server. In Access Point (AP) mode, the Router will need to be configured with an IP address that is in the same subnet as the rest of the network that you will bridge to. The default IP address is 192.168.2.254 and subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. These can be customized for your need.
1. Enable the AP mode my selecting “Enable” in the “Use as Access Point only” page. When you select this option, you will be able to change the IP settings.
2. Set your IP settings to match your network. Click “Apply Changes”."

Pcdunce, Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif
Be patient, someone more in the know about your problem will come by sooner or later. I'm not familiar with that router nor am I a wiz at networking. AAMOF, I'm not a wiz at all! Well maybe I'm a wiz at knowing I'm not a wiz :p
