I am using XP home, a couple of days ago, in order to run a down loaded game which is image file, I unplugged my optical drive ( according to some expert advice ) for the system to recognise the virtual drive ( Daemon Tools ) as default. it worked. but unfortunately, after I replugged the drive, it became weird, it either keeps showing the previously loaded Disk contents even though I eject that disk and insert a new one or does not show anything. Looks like if I restart the system with the disk in it, it will initially read the disk correctly but after that, the problem reappears. I restored the system to a few check points before the unplugging incident but that doest help either.

any help and many thanks in advance.

Make sure the drive's cables are securely connected.
If ok, then install a different known working IDE cable and power lead.
If no luck, then see if the drive works on another system. If not, then it's probably bad.

thks for your advice, but I am pretty sure the drive is physically good, coz when I use burning software to burn sth,it works fine. I assume there is something wrong on the system level, like registry or sth.

as I said before, the drive works when I load the first CD after restart, it is another evidence that it is not damaged, but after initial recognition, it stops responding.
