Well I keep getting these spam and pop-up warnings (with the yellow triangle with the exclamation inside it) on the right-hand part of the taskbar.

So I think my computer is either telling me that something is amiss or I have some kind of virus that wants me to download this spamscanner thing or whatever...

Plus IE is not opening up on me unless I open a program that involves IE to trigger and open up a webpage. I click on the IE on the desktop, hit enter when I highlight it, and it seems like it wants to open up (the hourglass it going, but it dies...), but it doesn't.

Is there anything in there that might be malicious?

Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Btw, this is my sister's computer, mine is down at the moment... I think it might have been this helpsvc.exe file that killed the HD, but I can't be certain. I hope I can find someone that can recover a couple of files from it...

I keep getting this FakeAlert-B trojan that pops up on McAfee A LOT. It appears to attack system32. I am going to go into safe mode and run Ad-Aware and McAfee, brb in an hr or so probably.

Blah, it seems I need to upgrade this laptop to Service Pack 2 (because if it had it I wouldn't have gotten infected with FakeAlert-B in the first place?). How do I know what Service Pack I am currently using because I need to get Internet Explorer Version 7.0 (beta) so I can download the service pack 2 (it says I need to be running IE to download the service pack, and my IE is down here because of some weird spyware or something that I noticed when I opened IE yesterday and my home page was some weird place with a lot of links to random crud I didn't want to go to)??

Internet Explorer 7.0 requires me to know what Service pack I am using, and if I get 7.0 I can use IE again and download Service Pack 2 so I can prevent FakeAlert-B from re-infecting me, right?

I know I am getting off-topic, but can anyone help me out with this FakeAlert-B thing?

First, you cannot upgrade to SP2 until your machine is clean. Second which PC are you wanting to upgrade to SP2? Yours or your sisters.

It would be a good idea to print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Also post a new HJT log and tell us how the system is running.

Hmm...rather short log for rapport...?

BTW, I think I somehow fixed it because it isn't popping up anymore or at least not once every 20 or so minutes (Fake Alert-B)... In other words my desktop background wasn't there when I rebooted after cleaning up the registry in safe mode.

This advice was requested to get rid of Fake Alert-B on my sister's laptop, my trial with Norton ended a while back (they didn't seem that great in the first place...imo...)...


So how do I find out what service pack I am currently using?

In Explorer go to Help...then select About Windows...that should tell you the build and SP.

Open Hijackthis and place a check next to:

Close all open program and browser windows except HJT and click fix checked.

Re-boot and post a new log.

I assume all is running well now.

If it is, there is a little more housekeeping we need to do before you upgrade to SP2.
