Hello, I have upgraded my Win98se to the XP home edition and everything went smoothly up to the point of opening XP. What I got was the nice country background but no Icon's or Task bar. Thoughts please

Hello MAKO
I am assuming you let it run for some time after you got to this point. How many times have you rebooted? Have you tried to reboot? Most likely you will need to Hard Boot if you have not yet (hold power button until machine shuts down). upon reboot, you will most likely be presented with a screen telling you windows was not shut down properly. Try "Start Windows Normaly" and let us know how that goes.

I have rebooted and also reloaded many times with no success. I have just put in a new HD and installed Win 98 and then once again tried the XP upgrade and have had success. No answer to why it wouldn't run on the older drive but I'm glad its running now! Thanks for the responce.

Generally speaking it is always best to clean install an upgrade (by choosing the option of a new installation) rather than simply upgrade the earlier version of windows. There should be no need to install Win98 prior to installing WinXP since if it is an upgrade edition all it may ask you is for proof of your Win98 ownership, which you achieve by putting its disk in the drive when prompted. It is possible that an upgrade CD will not be bootable but that problem can be addressed in a number of ways eg by copying the files to the HDD (http://www.iol.ie/%7Ekrakowangus/winnt.htm).

If your Win98 had any corruption or malware on it then an upgrade can fail so in the sense that you had a clean Win98 installation, the upgrade should of itself be more likely to be successful.
