Classic game and I have recently been getting back into it. But there is a problem I cant play online for some reason. I have DSL and when I had dial-up I could play online without any problems but ever since I got DSL it will not let me play. This is what happens: When I am in the Age of Empires room they host launches it and it goes to the Age of Empires screen and says setting up Multiplayer Game then it stays there for a minute or two then shuts off and takes me back to the Age of Empires lobby. I think it may have something to do with ports being closed on my router that need to be open to play it online but I came here because I always come here for my PC problems (I love yall guys) but anyway. Any help??
And by the way I am hooked up with a D-Link DI-604 Router.

This site (http://www.u.arizona.edu/~trw/games/ports.htm) will tell you which ports you need to open.
But I'm wondering if the game still thinks you're on dial-up? Have you changed the multiplayer/online settings for LAN instead of dial-up? Check the game's menu system first, then look for other problems. Also, what version of Windows are you running?

WinXP is a good sign. But that is an older game, so you might have to put a bit more work into it...

Yea bad news when i try to mess with the router settings it wont let me go in with just putting admin for the username and leaving the password blank, because I forgot my actualy username and password. I've tried turning off my Firewall and it still wont let me play it online. It lets me play Starcraft fine but it wont with Age of Empires. :(

Hm, try resetting your router (you will have to take a paperclip, streach it out, and poke the reset hole until u feel a click). A warning: this will reset the router to factory settings (aka all settings go back to default).
Then you can use the admin blank combo and set up the router.

The settings have never been messed with so reseting it would not do anything.

Does the router have instructions for resetting the password then? All routers should - this does happen to people. Even in the corporate world. Someone forgets the password, or the only person who ever knew it is no longer with the company. For this reason, every router has some way of resetting everything and/or the password.
