Submitting to search engines

How does one get ones new, fresh and exciting webdite submitted to search engines and included in their searches?

I've tried going to the engines sites, like Google, but it's not very clear. I've got Meta tags and Meta descriptions in my code but I just want to know how to get the search engines to recognise it?

You could just wait for the spiders to find your site and add it without do anything yourself.

Or you can pay to have your site put in many different search engine at once. There are many that offer this service at varying rates.

A mixture of what jlreich suggested is often the way to go.
Paying for a couple of months advertising may be worthwhile if you really need to get your site viewed, as it will probably generate more hits to start with. After this you could quit using paid advertising, as the referrals through people clicking your site should wake the spiders up and put your site where it's recognised.
I haven't paid for advertising -I delayed putting my site up, even though I could have had some free google adverts :eek: and it took a while for my site to be recognised, on the other hand, I created a website recently for someone and it was recognised within a week - I guess the spiders were just in the neighbourhood at the right time!

When I had my site running, all it took was to mirror HijackThis....then I was getting dang close to running out of bandwidth every month.
