OS=WinXP

Custom built comp
GA-7VT600-p mobo kt600 chipset
athlon xo 2800
1gig DDR3200
radeon 9800 pro
120gb WD 7200rpm
40gb 5400rpm

The problem I am having:

I am having a problem booting my computer. This problem was created by half assed OS setup i did a few years back which has now ultimatley given me a "cannot load OS" message right after post. I will try to outline exactly how this problem came to be fromt he start.

Originally i had XP installed on my 40GB HD.. I then got my 120gb hd and soon after decided to put a clean install of XP on it. I foolishly did not format my original HD because I wanted to take my time transfering over files. What this did was create a situation where the new OS would not startup after i tried to make my 120 the primary, so i left it piggybacked on the obsolete 40gb one ehich was pretty much inoperable at that point. I figured out then that i could not start my working OS without the remenants of winXP on my old drive which was still c:.

At some point I took it in for a tuneup and my hardware config as changed to the 120gb being the master and 40gb being the slave.. Although the software config was still exactly the same with the inoperable OS being on c: and the new one on e:. The main one would still not startup if i had the old 40gb disabled or unhooked.

So this is where i make a somewhat critical mistake... I was tweaking my computer and doing some heavy matenance and i formatted the old HD not thinking about what the repruccusions would be. After I restarted my comp I would get the error message.

So I have since tried just about everything I can with the hardware and bios configurations, the most motable results are these:

In its former working config i get: "error loading OS" after post

With any sort of CMOS alteration or boot sequences I get the same result if memory serves correct.

When I hook up the 120gb singularly I will get: Disk boot failure.

When i hook up the 40gb regularly I get the error loading OS.

I have been pissing about trying just about every possible hardware and cmos combination possible and no luck. So I know I will have to plug my HD into another comp or get some miracle boot disk(which would be difficult becuase i lack blank CD's or would have to xfer my floppy to the other comp to burn a disk.) So before I spend another few hours swapping parts back and forth and maybe making things worse by trying random fixes I figure I better ask for help.

Any help pointing me int he right direction would be much apprietiated, and if I dont have to format my main OS I would be exteemely happy.

I managed to make the problem far worse than it was so I am in the process of reformatting which should go well as long as I can resist the temptation to take a baseball bat to my PC.

If not fixed or if the problem recurs do check with fdisk or with BiNG or other Partition Manager that the relevant partition on both HDDs is marked as active.

Is there a "Repair" option on your XP installation disk. My Win2000 "Repair" procedure seems to be able to get things working again no matter how messed up they are. Sounds like it wants to start the boot process from the 40G, but somehow that got corrupted. Try running the "Repair" with the 40G disconnected.
