How can my site be # 1 on a google search. I know that having alot of links to it is one way, are there any others ?

Put something good on it...

Seriously.

For a time, I was #1 on google for HijackThis...because for a couple of weeks the main download site was down and I was about the only mirror left (several of the 'heavy duty' mirrors hadn't carried it yet). After a couple more mirrors were added I dropped, but I didn't mind because I was getting very close to exceeding my bandwidth for the second month in a row (I went over for the last part of one month and nearly went over in the first week and a half/two weeks of the following month).

But content is as important as a lot of mindless links...in fact, it may be more important.

There are some very big corporations that would really like to know the answer to that question... Google makes a point of keeping their system secret... The only effective way to do it that I know is what mjc said, offer something that people really want...

Google works in mysterious ways... I know a forum that deals with C++, yet scores in the top 10 for Turing help.

Google works in mysterious ways...Ooh, spooky... :p

If you can figure out how Google works, they'll probably hire you! :D My guess is that it's probably an ever-changing, distributed system, organic algorithm type of thing.

Nah...it's several dozen trained monkeys throwing darts at a list of site names...

If you play U2's song backwards does Bono tell you how Google works?

Hmmm... I wonder if the dart boards are virtual? :p Although personally, I'd use chimpanzees. They like fruit!

Actually, i was playing on something my preacher said "God works in mysterious ways" lol.

My serious theory is that they take the most popular seaches, then record what websites the searchers went to, and put those sites higher on their lists.

suchy,
u know their sponsored links side is up to the highest bidder system with relevance for the word search...its a great way to get revenue for em, so..some words with relevance to u'r site may only have a cheap bid of 9cents per click or some may go up to a buck a click.

anton ;)

If it were that simple, tons of scammers would always be at the top of the list... They are very clear that there is a lot more complexity to it than that...

So what are we talking here then? Like super-genius ninja monkeys!?

Google is too big now... These monkeys worry me... :(

Perhaps the Google CEO just picks and chooses what he likes :) (jk)
