Hey guys,
I just recently unplugged a USB adapter that I use to connect to the router to, and it screwed with something. Whenever I try to connect I get an IP of 169.254.XXX.XXX, I've tried reinstalling and everything. All I did was unplug it for like, a minute, and I think that I can't contact my DHCP server. Is there any way to fix this or set the DHCP manually.
Oh, one more thing. I think it might be just that computer. It won't connect to the router wired, or wirelessly, please help!

Try Start => Run => cmd => ipconfig /renew.

That should manually renew it...

Tried it. Says that it can't contact the DHCP server.

OK...power down the modem, pull the plug on it and let it sit for about ten minutes. Also, uring this time power down the computer. Then boot the computer, plug in the modem and finally the USB cable.

Well, the USB isn't really a cable but a flash drive looking thing that connects wirelessly to the router.
I just tried all your steps, and windows is still giving me the default 169.254.XXX.XXX IP.

Ok, well, I can input an actual IP manually, and it sends and recieves packets, but I still can't connect to the interweb.

Ok...since you are using a USB wireless connector, is there some sort of software that controls the thing? Something that provides you with a signal stregth and basic set up for it?

You'll need to make sure that you are getting adequate signal strength and that the settings for you wireless network are correct. (network name, encryption, etc)

Yeah, it's called Clientmanager. I've already tried to reinstall it, and that didn't help. So I tried WZC, that didn't help either. I just don't understand.

Does your router have any wired ports? Would it be possible to connect the router to your computer (temporarily) by hardwiring it?

At this point we still don't know if the fault is with the USB device or the router...

The router should have reset when I had you unplug it.

Well, I'm pretty sure that it's with the machine. How do I know this? I've already tried an ethernet connection on the normally wireless computer, heck I've even tried a direct connection to the modem, and I've reset all my routers defaults, it's gotta be my computer. Is there any way to install a new DHCP client?

Ok, can access the router's admin functions?

Is WEP or WPA enabled?

If so have you entered the proper key in the USB device's manager to enable it? What are the options in the USB device's manager for WEP/WPA?

If you disable WEP/WPA can you connect? (if one was enabled, then, after you get a connection again, you should create a new key and re-enable it, because this is vital network security)

Something I dug up on MSKB....

I can't connect to my router's settings, but I can send and recieve packets. Also, I wasn't encrypted before and I couldn't connect, but I am now, and I still can't connect.

EDIT: Just looked at the link, how do I renew my DHCP's lease thingy, and I am on SP2.

We tried the ipconfig /renew already. You can also try ipconfig /release

All that does is give an IP of 0.0.0.0, and then tries to connect automatically and still can't renew. Please help! I'm going through withdrawal here (no interweb without my super computer), and if there's a file someowhere on the internet that will restore all my settings to norm, it would be awesome.

I haven't been able to find anything else other than the ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew

Are you logged in as the Adminstrator?

You may need to log in as Admin and issue both commands....

Ok, let's see

1. I unplugged the USB adapter, screwing with the settings
2. I've actually messed around with the TCP/IP settings since then, but right now they are on automatic
3. I had an unencrypted network, but now it's encrypted with no change in connectivity
4. I enabled WZC and when I don't connect, but I'm about to, the status of the network is
(SSID)
Encrypted Click to connect
5. I tried registering a new DNS, renewing my IP, releasing it, and connecting directly to the modem wired, and directly to the router wired still not getting a response from a DHCP server
6. I am now searching for a downloadable DHCP server to use.

Also, is there a scope I can use for IP's?

How about a winsock fix, this may work

step 1. turn off the windows fire wall
2. disable the anti virus 3. do the "netsh winsock reset catalog" fix-run
4. disable the local area network in the network connections
5. turn pc off
6. unplug pc and hit the pwr button with no pwr in pc...(this will release the last bit of pwr in pc and release the ip add)
7. pwr cycle mdm
8. turn pc back on
9. disable antivirus program(s)
10. enable the local area network (new ip address should be displayed in the details box on the bottom of the left hand side)

I have been trying for some time to reestablish a connection from my daughters computer to our network. Hers is an athlon about 5 yrs. old. Mine is a dell 8400 3.2 pentium 4. We have been connected for 2 yrs. Have a linksys wireless wrt54g and I installed a wireless linksys wmp11 wireless pci card. It may have something to do with settings although I've gone over them repeatedly with tutorials. Both computers run XP home and I've run all the setup wizards network and wireless. I believe hers is corrupted by spyware and I guess my question is how do I identify and remove spyware on a computer which can't connect to the internet and which has not had spybot definitions updated since January? Can anyone help me?
