Ok, this is a co-workers company owned laptop that I have at home until we can get this taken care of.

It has everything.

I ran ewido which cleaned 52 items but I can't find the log that I saved for some reason.

I ran a spybot scan which showed Smitfraud, Spysheriff, Alexa, vx2, different toolbars etc etc. I then knew I was in over my head. :o

When the computer first boots a command window pops up with system32/runsrv.32 and goes way. Then windows explorer pops up in windows/system32 which stays until I close it.

Popups on the desktop warning of spyware/adware/virus. IE options are locked and goes to AntiSpywareBox.com when loaded, which has windows security center icons and such.

When I go into administrative services I can stop a service by r-clicking and stopping, but when I go into the service's properties none of the buttons respond at all.

I get a "security center" alert box that says system is shutting down do to lsass corruption (or something) with a countdown but it does not shut off.

I have since installed FF so I can get online.

They don't have a FW other than windows FW, against my recommemdations of course. Hell it took me over two years to get them to fork out the bucks for a corporate AV. Which comes up with zero infections.

Thanks for any help. I know it's a mess. And sorry I didn't come here before doing any scans, I know it just makes things harder. :o

Ummm....that popup box sure sounds like sasser.

That is what is left after a couple of scans/removals?

You've still got a ton of crapware on there.

Also it is very possible that the corp AV is being blocked/conned/hoodwinked or otherwise defeated...go grab ClamWin (link in my sig) and scan it with that...if you have a USB flash drive, grab the portable version of ClamWin from portableapps.com

Lets see what Ewido can kill first:

Please download, install, and update the NEW free version of Ewido Anti-Malware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/):

When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".

When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.

After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.

If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. Select "Remove" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Re-boot and post a new HJT log and the Ewido log.

Also go MS-CONFIG and see if anything is loading in the Windows section of System.INI

I read that was what was left after killing 52 items with ewido already.

You can try this too:

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

Also, I am moving this to the Security forum...

Oops I thought I did put it in the security forum.

Doing another ewido scan right now and will make sure I save the report this time. Will scan with Dr. Web next and post back results.

That is what is left after a couple of scans/removals?
MJC, it all just comes back after the initial scans. 4 Minutes into ewido and it already has picked up 17 infections again. All the "no file" entries I removed with HJT came back as well.

The shut down isn't sasser. It's part of the popups just to entice you into clicking on it.

I will post back when the scans are done. Thanks guys.

Well, at least one of the infectors is a self spawner...you may need to do this in ?Safe Mode, instead of Normal.

Well everything is the same. Here is the ewido and HJT log. Dr. Web found nothing after ewido. I am going to try the scans in safe mode next.

Then run this tool and see if any of this is there:

Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

And then run this:

Please download [url=http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=7]Look2Me-Remover.exe (http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm) to your desktop.
Close all windows before continuing.
Double-click Look2Me-Remover.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run this program as a task.
You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Remover will close and re-open in approximately 10 seconds. Click OK
When Look2Me-Remover re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button, your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button.
You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK.
When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Remover will now shutdown your computer, click OK.
Your computer will then shutdown.
Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\Look2Me-Remover.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
If you receive a message from your firewall about this program accessing the internet please allow it.

If you receive a runtime error '339' please download MSWINSCK.OCX from the link below and place it in your C:\Windows\System32 Directory.

Some progress has been made. Ran everything in safe mode except for Loom2me. Ewido removed 19. Dr. Web came up empty. Used the clean option with Smitfraud. and used HJT.

Popups are gone. IE is back to normal. The only thing still showing up is the cmd window with runsrv.32 and windows explorer bringing up system 32.

Many many thanks again.

Your log looks clean and I am not sure what is causing the remaining problem... If no one else has a more direct option, I suggest running Silent Runners to get a more thorough scan:

Please download SilentRunners from here:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip
Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, it will create a logfile on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

Thanks for the link Sylvander. It wasn't exactly what I needed but it did help me get in and delete the leftover entries for some adware. After a few reboots it seems to be gone. :)

Budfred I didn't think to look before but there where some things disabled in msconfig. :o I enabled all of them and used HJT to get rid of the leftover bad stuff. The log now looks like it did as the last one I posted before with the exception of a few known good entries that where disabled. Everything seems to be in order.

Below is silent runner just in case.

I will be leaving for the weekend in about an hour and won't have internet access. :p But I will check in as soon as i get back Sunday night. I will go about getting this thing updated as soon as you give the all clear.

Thanks for all your help.

That looks pretty good... The only thing left that might be worthwhile is running more rootkit scans...

http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/

And/or:

Please download RootkitRevealer.exe and unzip it into a folder. Run a scan and produce a log...
http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/RootkitRevealer.zip
When it is done, go to File and select Save...
Include the log in your next reply.
Do not worry if there are a large number of items, this is normal.
It is a deep scan which will take a considerable amount of time, I suggest you disconnect from the internet and leave the PC alone until its finished.

To reduce the size of the log posted here, please edit out items that appear in these folders if there are some:
C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT
C:\System Volume Information
before you post the log....

Cool I will take care of the cookies.

I have been telling them to use FF for a long time now. They just don't listen. Some people just don't like change. If it was up to me it would be mandatory. ;)

MJC, I am a little sad about not being able to use the shotgun. I have been wanting to blow away a Dell for quite a while now. :D

Just install FF, add a couple of extensions, find the Luna (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1622/previews/) theme and call it IE 7 Beta...they'd never know the difference.... :D

Hmm, maybe I should just change the icon for the FF shortcut to the IE icon and delete the IE shortcut. :D

I wonder how long before they would notice. :p
