Laguna
06-09-2006, 03:35 PM
Ok this is my friends Laptop he asked me to have a look at it for him and when I did i found it was riddled with Malware.
I couldn't access the internet when I first tried because the Malware was that bad.I installed SpyBot search&Destroy Ewido Anti-Malware Ad-Aware and AVG free from my external drive as i couldn't access the internet to download them.
They couldn't be updated either so i scanned with the definitions that were just built into the install.
After removing heeps of crapware from the machine i could access the internet.
So i updated all of the above and and scanned again and all of them found a load more.
If needed I will name what I can remember of the crap I removed but for now I will leave it at that. Here is the HJT log from the machine.
As always any help is appreciated.

Urgent help needed here. This stuff keeps coming back and the machine is slowing down nearly to a halt.

The log looks clean... You are going to need to run some other tools...
* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.
Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Thanks for the help Budfred.
Ok well I did as instructed and I could not click the nest icon next to the items found, and during the DR.web scan AVG popped up finding several trojans all similar or exactly the same as the ones I had removed earlier.
Anyway here are both the logs.

I am still not sure what you have... It would help if you could provide some info on what was cleaned...
Also, run CCleaner to clean out all temp folders:
http://www.ccleaner.com/
Then do a Silent Runners log:
Please download SilentRunners from here:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip
Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, it will create a logfile on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

Ok The computer was infected with Alexa Spyware and was found and removed by both Ad-Aware and SpyBot. There was loads of other types but I can not remember what they were called. There was something about a Market but I can't remember the second word. And The machine was/is iinfected with a worm that went by the name of svchost2 trying to fool my friend into believing it was the svchost process. It kept trying to access the internet when I was scanning but I denied it everytime.
The list of trojans is endless but i'll name what I can.
Trojan Horse Backdoor.Generic.OKO
Trojan Horse Downloader.Agent.AHL also, .AYE, .13.D, .11.AA
Trojan Horse Agent.Z
Thats all I can remember there was a lot of generic Adware also.
Hope this helps, and what next?
Budfred

I don't see anything in Silent Runners and Alexa is a trivial issue, so I am not sure what you are seeing now... Are you still getting the popups... If so, run an online virus scan and try this rootkit scanner:
http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/
Laguna
06-10-2006, 09:53 AM
No everything seems to have calmed down now.
But i did get another AVG pop up about another trojan during an Ad-aware scan.
I just sent it to the virus vault and there has been nothing since.
I did the rootkit scan and it found nothing.
Do you think now is an appropriate time to install SP2?
Or is there anymore checks to be done?
Budfred
06-10-2006, 11:40 AM
AVG may just be reacting to the scans with false positives... If you don't see any evidence of malware, I would clear System Restore, set a new Restore Point and then update to SP2...
Laguna
06-10-2006, 11:42 AM
Ok Budfred thanks for all your help.
I'll reply with the verdict.
The other thing that AVG is very good at finding is the malware files in any sort of archive. If you've cleaned something and had the cleaner make a backup, AVG will probably find it. So in addition to cleaning SysRestore, go ahead and dump any back ups made by any other cleaners...
Laguna
06-10-2006, 04:04 PM
I never made any archives from the scans i did.
Never do I don't see the need to.
But anyway I installed SP2 and did all above scans again and set up a fort of security for him and he is gone home with the laptop a happy camper.
So now all we have to do is wait and see if it stays that way.....I have a feeling you can all expect me back about his computer
Thanks again for all your help BudFred.
And thanks for the info mjc
