View Full Version : voltage and amperage of power adapter

A buddy gave me an old U.S. Robotics 56K Sportster external modem (model 0648) which I'll still get some use out of. He lost the power adapter but I have a dozen other adapters from various appliances, computer speakers, and other electronic gizmos and gadgets. I can buy the correct size barrel plug at Radio Shack (or cut and splice from another one) but I don't want to fry this modem so I need to know what voltage and amperage the power adapter should be. There is nothing on the modem itself or the U.S. Robotics website to indicate voltage and amperage of the power adapter. Any ideas?

Thanks,

USR modems are oddballs with the power adapters.

9.2V and 700mA.

I looked through my box of power adapters (after posting my question) and there is one in there marked U.S. Robotics. I can't imagine what it's from if not a modem. It's 9V 780 mA so I'll try it out on my ext. modem. I can't imagine that slight differences in voltage and amperage will make any difference...but then I don't know about this stuff. I don't have anything to lose at this point.

Probably it will work.

Hi there,

I just digged up the same type of US Robotics Sportster message plus 56K external. Adapter gone, of course. I emailed Support where they confirmed it works with a 9.2V 700mA adapter, now, you wont buy one of those in Hungary :)
i am planning to get a 9.0V 700mA and see if it works with that.. Did you get anywhere with your 9.2V and 780 mA?

thnks in advance,

chicken

This thread is almost two months old, so the problem has probably been resolved. Piggybacking on someone else's thread can be confusing, so please start your own threads for new problems. You can always reference the old thread in the new one.

The 9.0v might work if the connectors are the same.
