After switching HD's on my PC my main HD (Western Digital WD1200) lost all out partitions (Fat 32) and the space was unallocated when I checked in Partition Magic on a 2nd PC. So I tried couple of partition recovery and file recovery tools without any effect. (no big deal, since I had backups).

So then in Partition Magic 8 I tried to create new partition, but the HD was showing up as only having about 8 megs total insted of about 117 Gigs. Then I tried to install XP pro, and the HD was showing having 47 Gigs of unallocated space but XP was unable to create a partition (couple of times).

Then I tried to run a low-level format with Wipe Drive 3 Pro, but it was unable to start. Then I took the HD out of the PC and when I disconected the HD fans, like those:

and I noticed tons of dust. When I got rid of this dust, and started Wipe Drive now the HD was showing as having 117 gigs not 47 as before and started with out any problems.

Was the dust the problem, or something else?
Also what could have caused the partitions to get erased ?

Umm...it sounds like the poor drive was slowly roasting or you had some conductive dust and things were shorting out, not enough to fry the drive just enough to screw with its 'brain'.
