I am in the process of buying a new CD read/write,
and am looking for any good advice on the products that are better then the rest.
I am looking to spend around $150 (less is better). will use for home/general use.
On a Plll 800, 384RAM 20G, VooDoo5AGP.
thanks

Hi

I just bought a Creative 12•10•32 CD-RW. Seems pretty easy to use.
I can't speak about longevity as I have only had it for a couple of weeks
$129.95

Here's one of many posts on the subject...

i have an HP 8/4/32 i bought a year ago( paid over $250 then), the tech is changing so fast on them, it's kinda hard to pick now! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif
I don't think much of HP's computers-but they make good periphals, scanners, etc...i think wal-mart has a newer model like mine for around $99 now. Can't beat them for good deals, not to mention they'll take back just about anything http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

IMHO Phillips brand is a mistake. Whizzed mine to the dumpster and bought a HP. Just my .02 and I usually get change back. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

I know it will probably cost a little more, but just remember the
name Plextor. I have had one of their CDR and one of their CDRW
for two years now...I will never change brands. You should probably
be able to get one for less than 200 bucks easily.

Thanks for the info. Its much appreaciated. As I dont want to buy a peice of crap. I have read a lot about Plextor. And at this point am going in that direction.
I have a sound blaster ans love the card itself. but the tech support I got there would stop me from buying anything else from them. Between card and speakers I spent around $400, and they don't even return my email....
Will look into HP a little more.

Have a look at some of the Yamaha products too . The CRW2100E is extremely fast (40x16x10), has an 8Mb buffer (most other CDR/W have a 2Mb buffer) and is reasonably priced here in the UK , not too sure what it's priced at on your side of the pond though .
