If I purchase a NIC card, will it work with the cable companys internet cable service? Or do I have to buy their cable card? A friend told me this and I was wondering if there was any truth to it. I'm looking for a cheap way to get a faster connection without paying all the part prices, installation, etc. fees.

I dont know the score over in the US but here in little old UK, the cable modem is external and can be connected to your PC via a USB connection or NIC using RJ45.

You will be using an external cable modem so you will want a NIC with the RJ [oversized tele looking plug] connection rather than a coaxial connection; however, some new NIC's come as "combo" cards with both types of connections on them.

Check with your cable company, when mine was installed (free installation from Comcast) they gave me the USB adapter for free..if I didn't have any USB ports, they would have given me (again for free) a NIC...

You may be able to save yourself the $

And if they ask if you have any free USB ports, say no, that way they'll give you a NIC...I went out and bought one anyway and now I use the USB adapter to hook people up to my LAN when they bring a computer over...

When all else fails, read the instructions.
