If you plan to purchase a computer [as opposed to building it]...here's a few things I would look for:
1. Get a AMD Athalon or Duron System......you get MUCH more bang for the buck.
2. 128 MB Ram or more if within budget [not more than 256 mb regardless..doesnt help enough].
3. Ethernet Card included with system [ all of us will likely have cable or dsl modems in the near future].
4. System with NO integrated Sound or VIDEO on the motherboard.
5. At least 32 MB Ram Video Card......64 MB if within budget
6. A system with Win 98 rather than Me installed on it.
7. A regular CD rom + A CD Burner installed
You should be able to do all of this for about $1,000 including at least a 15" monitor.....maybe even a 17" through DELL or IBM......stay away from the other manufacturers if you can........The best thing is to find a good INDEPENDENT near you to build it for you and warrant it locally.
